Chiropractic for Kids!
Chiropractors for generations have warned of the problems associated with Childbirth. Even with so-called “normal” childbirth, about 10% of Newborns show postural asymmetry caused by damage to the Upper Cervical Spine. Recently, clinicians have started to refer to this as
KISS = Kinematic Imbalances due to Suboccipital Strain. (not a rock group).
Research is way behind clinical observation, but this appears to be the cause of many cases of colic. It may be a contributor to SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), and appears to contribute to developmental deficits.
Uncorrected KISS could be a factor in slow development of balance and “clumsiness” in children. It may be the cause of headaches.
Evaluation and Treatment is the best way of finding if that is the cause for one child. Approximately 55% of parents in one clinic reported tremendous improvement in symptoms of colic (crying). One (or a very few number of) adjustments has stopped crying or relieved disabling headaches for schoolchildren.
What about more Research?
Dr.Biedermann suggests success may be the biggest obstacle. In other words, no parent who thinks Chiropractic may work will want their child to be in the Control (not adjusted) group
Other problems, a sudden pull at the extended arm of a toddler can result in a subluxation of the elbow. The child's arm hangs as if paralyzed and is not used. A simple adjustment is in most cases sufficient to correct this situation
Form and Function
It will still be a long time before we have research that confirms that Chiropractic Spinal Correction will result in more normal development of bone shape in the adult, even though we have reason to believe this is the case.
Correcting chronic posture like this is relatively simple and will result in symmetrical development of the child's bones and body. In traditional Orthopedics, this was referred to as "rightening" the child.
What about Safety?
Although a great deal of concern has been expressed about the safety of Chiropractic adjusting for children, the actual record is virtually no “adverse events after manual therapy”.
X-Rays on kids?
Risk-benefit analysis clearly favors standard procedure of taking radiographs … regardless of the age of the patient. In other words, trust your Chiropractor’s judgment.
