Papaya seeds and parasites!?
I mentioned to a friend that papaya seeds are used in some salad dressings (very spicy). Then, I just learned that papaya seeds will kill parasites. Of course, it requires some steady dosing, but that doesn't sound like a problem to me. Amazing, the stuff I keep learning. Now, if I just had some parasites....http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17472487

Multiple Sclerosis

This is revisiting an old issue to me, comments below-Dr. Rik

I'm not a neuroimmunologist but ...Samuel Pleasure, MD, Neurology, 02:23PM Feb 10, 2010…

"What this all amounts to is that there still seems to be major uncertainty in what triggers an MS lesion. Is it a direct injury to myelin from some source that leads to phagocytosis of myelin with later antigen driven inflammation? This seems likely in some cases.

What all this means for therapy is really unclear. Drugs directed toward T and B cells may still be very sensible as there is abundant evidence that these cells may interfere with regeneration and exacerbate injury, but these therapies may not be addressing the underlying problem. Therapies aimed at enhancing regeneration are probably important, but it is also now important to consider additional therapies aimed at the innate immune cells of the CNS (there is evidence that some of the drugs used in MS do target microglia and macrophages to some extent). It may also be time to revisit issues of myelin protection in some manner."

Dr Rik-Chiropractors have had pretty good success with MS patients, which has never gotten the interest of the Medical profession BAU (business as usual). A “history” is standard with all new patients. Those that have MS routinely report a head or neck trauma. An “old” motor vehicle crash is typical (“how can that be connected?”). With certain people, there is a later process (described very nicely above) that causes breakdown of nerve insulation (the “sclerosis”). Spinal correction based on X-Ray seems to help a lot. I also recommend certain specialized fat supplements to help the nerve regeneration (notice how popular Omega 3 and DHA are now in the supplement list). But the question remains…what is the preventative value of Chiropractic spinal correction immediately after such traumas; would it reduce the number of MS cases?

Seems like a good question to me.

Hey, I have a credit card terminal too!
I must frustrate a lot of people. I got "the latest" on turmeric. Oh my, if you want it to work you must buy a specially encapsulated pill or it won't be effectively absorbed and used by the body for all that good stuff that traditional curries are supposed to be so wonderful for. You mean curries don't work anymore?
Is this a recent development? Cooking and serving with meat destroy the healing properties? Did this happen just after you became a vegan or about the same time you started selling this through your paypal account? And you want me to sell it? That may be why I'm not rich. If heavy duty curry with lots of peppers, meat and vegetables were good before, they probably still are now.
And I don't even have an interest in the local Thai restaurant. What am I thinking?
Beware of "experts" with online credit card terminals.

The annual flu hysteria from our government nannies
Flu marketing becomes more aggressive every year. The confusion and misinformation is appalling, so I am adding this to my previous comments.
Years ago, when Public Health workers first started camping in Beijing, to catch the first cases of annual flu (transmitted from the duck ponds), they would identify the recombination of factors for the year, crash manufacture the appropriate vaccine and race it out on jet planes. It was a high pressure operation that suits the heroic aspirations of many M.D.s. Good stuff, great story. But those same planes also transmit the flu (via passengers) and aren't moving any slower. So it's easy to lose the race. At least one year, they guessed the combination to get a jump start and got it wrong. Effectiveness dropped to about 10%. It's harder and harder every year to stay ahead of the transmission of this year's annual flu.
In addition, the effectiveness of the vaccine is improved by preservatives (formaldehyde) which allows it to sit on a shelf, and mercury which increases the "presentation" of the viral components that stimulate an immune response. The detail that is not often mentioned, these are poisons.
It's a tough job to get the vaccine, but an uninformed public does not know about the risks and drawbacks. People don't know that it may not work or that it may be toxic.

Where I lived and worked in the Northwest, the flu is a big deal. I had walking pneumonia for about 1 month a year. It made every winter truly miserable and kills a number of the older people every year.
I took the vaccine one year and no flu! That was great!
Having said that, the actual rate of effectiveness of flu vaccine ranges from 23% to 95% for older folks. It might work for you, and it might not. It might be worth the risk. But flu is not dangerous for the young, and having it does confer some immunity in following years. So why in the world would you vaccinate kids? We all hate to see our children sick and suffering. Personally I vote against flu vaccine for otherwise healthy children. I can see where it would be a tough choice

If you have not had problems with the flu in previous years, why the hurry to get the vaccine? If you have gotten the flu and subsequent pneumonia, or have other immune issues, well, it might have more value for you.
Almost no-one who goes to a Chiropractor for the flu dies from it, including the 1918 epidemic!

Let’s talk Chiropractic
One of my Chiropractic colleagues had two men come in for low back pain. He X-Rayed both and recommended the appropriate course of spinal correction. Tom did and Sam didn’t. Twenty years later, Tom was on his ongoing maintenance program and Sam came back in, hoping for relief for the Back Pain, that had never been “that bad” but maybe he could give this Chiropractic thing one more try. Doc X-Rayed Sam, when it occurred to him that he had the original X-Rays to compare to. He was able to compare Tom’s lifetime care with Sam’s “I can live with it”. The difference in Spinal Deterioration was dramatic. Unfortunately, this was not published as research. Similar studies are being done and are now, finally, almost ready for the Journals.
One of the best ways to control thought process is to choose your words and labels carefully. It is so common that it has become known as “Politically Incorrect”.
Let’s suppose that you are an M.D. Many, if not most, of the people who come to see you have some kind of pain that you can’t identify. Therefore you don’t know what to do about it. After all, M.D.s are not taught to identify and take care of Pain of Spinal origin. The good news from the M.D.s point of view is; it doesn’t seem to kill anyone, and it comes and goes. So you come up with a silly label like “self limiting uncomplicated back pain”…that’s a Diagnosis?
This ridiculous thinking extends so far that it affects HMO approved protocols which are then used to limit (or eliminate) Chiropractic care. After all, how serious is it?

Well, let’s check this out. "http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/561791

Daily back pain is associated with decreased quality of life, mobility, longevity, and increased risk for coronary heart disease (CHD) in elderly women, according to the results of a study reported in Spine.

So let me translate that for you. Spinal problems permitted to deteriorate can cause heart disease, death and other problems. This is the kind of radical wild thinking that has gotten Chiropractors in trouble with the Medical mainstream for generations! Could the Chiros be right? As my Swedish ancestors woulda said “sure and you betcha” Dr. Rik

Latest Research on Soft Tissue Therapy for Headaches
I have this recurrent fantasy. I live in the time of Thomas Jefferson (or Mary and Abraham Lincoln) and I have the opportunity to provide Chiropractic care for their headaches. I wonder how such a thing could change history. So I think this is cool. We have two recent research articles showing that specific soft tissue techniques improve the results for treatment of both tension and migraine headaches. Local and referred pain from active Trigger Points in the temporalis muscles may constitute one of the sources contributing to the pain profile of Chronic Tension Headaches. Fernandez-de-las-Penas C, et al. Clinical Journal of Pain November/December 2007; Vol. 23, Iss. 9, pp. 786-792. This article shows the beneficial effects of local therapy of active myofascial trigger points on migraine symptoms. Giamberardino MA, et al. The Journal of Pain. November 2007; Vol. 8, Iss. 11, pp. 869-878. If you look at the “About Us” on my website DrRik.net you will note that complete, thorough treatments, which include adjustments as well as any soft tissue and other necessary therapies have always been a basic part of the care provided. It works! If you know anyone with headaches, they don’t have to suffer, or depend on drugs. Get checked, please.

Aging, Health and Death
Is that a massive enough title for you? As soon as I die, I’ll send a complete summary of all that I learn…or maybe not.
One thing that is happening to me, I am personally experiencing some of the effects of aging and deterioration. These are related, but not the same thing. For instance, smoking, excess alcohol or drug use can cause deterioration (over time) that won’t happen if you don’t do these things.
Talking to many older folks (when I was younger), it seems that without other problems (genetic “bad luck” or injuries) that most people just get stronger and better well into their forties. That means that a 45 year old athlete could take the crown. Or you can just keep getting better for the first five decades of your life. It’s amazing how fast a half-century goes by. So now, instead of interviewing others, I can just sit back and keep notes. Or I can do everything I can to slow that decline slope
Eat less?
Recently, some science suggests that a few people have a different cellular metabolism/mechanism that gives them a distinct advantage in aging. It was suggested that just eating less food stimulates normal people’s cellular physiology in that direction. I’ll bet most will keep looking for that “magic pill” instead. However, this option is available to you without prescription
Supplements?
The latest front page science claims that anti-oxidant supplements actually increase your risk of death. I have a few questions about that research, but I thought the conclusion of a garlic study stated it quite well.
The scientists made high garlic sandwiches and measured cholesterol in the subjects. The cholesterol did not drop in the garlic group. One doc expressed some disappointment, and commented "You just can't go out and have an Egg McMuffin for breakfast, a Big Mac for lunch, a clove of garlic later and think you're okay. That's not the way it works," said Dr. Gardner. Well, duh…
One study, the authors claim Vitamins A, E and beta carotene in isolated doses don’t decrease and may increase death rates. Of course, there are many other studies showing the benefits of specific nutrients for specific reasons.
So the shotgun/silver bullet “take another pill” approach doesn’t compensate for poor nutrition or lifestyle. Have I said that before?

Neuro Musculo Skeletal expertise among M.D.s
I read a rather long and detailed article by an Orthopedic MD bemoaning how the typical MD Orthopedist can not evaluate spinal or any other joint motion or function from the standard tests. As he described these procedures in some detail, I realized that what he was reviewing exactly what every Chiropractor must know in order to graduate and practice. It is not news to me that the average MD can’t do these evaluations. It is a huge and devastating shame that the MDs don’t routinely refer to the experts (Doctors of Chiropractic) who base our entire careers on evaluating and correcting neuromusculoskeletal function (without surgery or drugs). I did send a letter to the editor. I wonder how far that will go? "http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/551149?src=mp"

As a follow-up, the good doctor replied and we had a very nice email exchange, although I think he was somewhat defensive. It turns out that he learned a bit of what he knows from a chiropractor. Not all M.D.s are completely closed minded, but the expertise is clearly in the Chiropractic profession.
Continuing this exercise in Medical Doctors parading their lack of competence and arrogant refusal to refer; the latest strategy for neck pain is EPIDURALS! Direct injections of Novocaine into the spinal cord. What are these bozos (not) thinking?

     Subjects of Massive Confusion

Osteo Porosis, Osteo Arthritis and Osteo Kyphosis.

I was asked, what are the most confused topics that people ask me about? These are the ones. I think the problem is that they are all Osteo’s. Osteo is simply a term that means bone. So the following term describes the problem. Could be lots of problems with bones, right? Don’t be intimidated by the technical terminology. Let’s translate!

Porosis is simple. Full of holes. Sounds terrible, right? It is. This is loss of bone mass that can get so bad, bones simply fracture all by themselves. The most common fractures are spinal (resulting in a hunch) or hip (resulting in a fall). People take Calcium to prevent or fix this, but it’s not a problem in isolation. Look at the person. They are frail, weak, no muscle. They probably don’t exercise. If told they have osteoporosis, they are probably afraid to exercise. They may be terrified of a chiropractor, thinking that they might break, right on the adjusting table. What a shame. A chiropractor could be a huge help.

Osteoporosis is a residual of that ancient era (when I was a child) and girls didn’t exercise because they might develop muscles and look like a boy. Even then, I had never seen an athletic girl who looked like a boy. I thought athletics girls looked even better! I don’t think any modern, athletic person need fear Osteoporosis unless you have some bizarre genetic condition.

One of my surf buddies from wayback has some kind of “Idiopathic” Osteoporosis. Idiopathic means us idiot doctors don’t know what the problem is. He has surfed big Hawaii waves all his life and continues to. Some people just don’t give up!

I had a patient who seemed quite healthy. When I studied her X-Rays, I almost fell over. They looked like crystal, hardly any bone there! I was clueless and told her so. “Oh” she said “that must have been the war years, in Germany. We didn’t have anything to eat for quite some time”. Good gracious! She followed every recommendation I made. The next densitometry exam as interpreted by her MD “looked good” because she “wasn’t losing bone mass as fast”. Well, that sucks, and I said so. She ate properly, took the recommended supplements and continued with her exercise program and personal trainer at 24 Hr. Fitness. The next densitometry (12 months after starting care with me) it was the MDs turn to fall over. Her bone mass increased and continued to! She is resistant to retiring, does her own yard work, travels regularly and adores playing with her grandkids.

Eat all natural and don’t be afraid to get intense with your exercise program.

Arthritis is joint inflammation. Osteoarthritis typically results from some kind of Trauma that damages joint, ligament, muscle, tendon, causing the joint to function improperly. It takes years and decades but the joint dysfunction results in deterioration of the joint, nerve irritation and episodes of painful inflammation. This is why those Back or Neck Pains come and go, but never heal themselves or disappear.

Chiropractors are the experts at correcting joint dysfunction. You must see a Chiropractor immediately following the injury to get proper healing. Injuries allowed to heal incorrectly develop internal scarring, called fibrosis, resulting in a chronic problem. We can get the joint to function better, with less pain. We can slow deterioration, but we can’t reverse joint damage that has already happened. You can take calcium or aspirin or any drug or concoction you want, but it won’t correct a problem of mechanical origin. Taking any pain pill or “anti-inflammatory” is just ignoring the problem while it gets worse.

Kyphosis is a forward bend of the spine. The classic genetic kyphosis was the Hunchback of Notre Dame. We see a lot of modern hunchbacks. They are called Office Workers. They don’t follow proper ergonomics, the boss expects way too many hours from them, and they probably have a host of associated pains and problems such as carpal tunnel, elbow or shoulder pain, headaches, chest pain and problems with breathing; or any combination of these and maybe a few others. This kyphosis is a Postural Overuse Syndrome, completing preventable and correctable. Chiropractic correction works great for these people! Once they learn where the problem comes from, they correct the ergonomics, follow through on Spinal Correction and it is no longer a problem. Unfortunately, most workers (and their insurance companies) don’t understand the critical value of spinal correction. Many people arrive at retirement, permanently and irreversibly hunched with a whole host of associated health problems and disability.

Kyphosis leads to Osteoarthritis which is a top cause of Disability and those blue rear view mirror stickers. Postural aggravation of a hunch combined with Osteoporosis, more quickly results in spinal fractures. That increases the kyphosis, decreases body height, causes more pain and disability and predisposes to the next spinal fracture.

These Osteo’s are all different, but linked. The body works as a unit, and health is a Whole (that’s why it’s called Holistic). Health problems are also often grouped. Follow the basics, prevent a whole lot of health problems, and be active as long as God intended for you and your family.
