Your sleep habits
Start out on your back. If that is not comfortable, you probably need Chiropractic spinal correction to get your head and neck position closer to normal.
I recommend the Cervical roll for back sleeping. Properly used, your head will be on the mattress, with no elevation at all.
See Sobagara Cervical Roll on "Cool Stuff for Sale" page.
You can also use a Towel Roll the same way
Don't get rid of the old pillow. Put it under your knees to relax the low back.
after a period of time, you will want to move around, go to side position and switch pillow (position)

The Splintex pillow is the best for side sleeping. It is also designed to help with TMJ symptoms!
Put the old pillow between your knees to ease stress on the Sacro-iliac.
You are correct if you noticed that you need two pillows (a back roll and a side pillow) and you need to be conscious of your position.
Some people move all over and don't necessarily even know what their position is!

The Therapeutica pillow is probably the best if you are all over the place and have no idea of how you are sleeping. It's three postion design allows you to hang onto one pillow the whole night.
All of these pillows are available through the "Cool stuff for $ale" page. Contact me at 510-343-4889 or Dr_Rik_DC<at>comcast<dot>net to order.
Alright already, yeah yeah, $20 for a Sobagara pillow, Highway Robbery! Just call me Dr. Sucker...uh...I mean Sympathetic. Below is the,
Procedure for making a Cervical Roll out of a Towel!

Start with a standard size Bath Towel. Different size towels will allow you to do custom roll sizes

fold in half lengthwise for convenience

carefully fold in half widthwise, edges to center, edges flush to each other, no wrinkles

This is it! Roll tightly from one end to the other

a couple of rubber bands will hold your towel together, and it's easily disassembled for laundry!

Jennifer does the demonstration of the correct way of using the Towel Roll. The roll should be more toward the base of the neck with the head on the mattress. Note that the folding technique left a soft, comfortable groove in the middle of the roll. If the roll is too big, use a smaller towel.
