Let's start with a
"Food Pyramid" I got this one from a Body building magazine. (slightly modified)
Remember the food
pyramid? You may have seen one in high school. Take a look at this one. It's a bit different.
First look at the
base. It’s Fruit and Vegetables. You eat more of these than anything else.
In fact, this is THE WORLD FAMOUS Dr. Rik's “all you
can eat” and actually lose weight diet! The only catch is, you can't eat anything else from the other food groups and you are limited to one starchy fruit or vegetable a day (banana or potato). This is actually the basis for the original "detoxification" diets and provides fabulous health benefits when done short term with professional supervision. (that's me)
And all the rich phytochemical
nutrients that you are saturating your body with. There is no downside!
The grain section is Whole Grains. Industrialization and Processing are the death of
perfectly good nutrients and could be the death of You! The bran and germ
commonly removed from grains is the most nutritious part. Ironically, it’s
often fed to cows and pigs, or even repackaged and sold back to you as “health
food”. It should never have been removed. Processed foods are a major cause of
Diabetes, Heart Disease and Hard Arteries! Any recipe can be made with whole,
natural ingredients.
I modified the “Protein section” to be half Beans, Legumes, and Tofu. You can eat
as little animal product as you want, as long as you eat some occasionally.
Animal products (meat, dairy, eggs) every day is not a nutritional necessity.
Once you
understand the pyramid, what do you do with it? It’s not always easy to see how
this relates to your food, or how you can change what you eat. That's why I wrote the Recipe page.
Learn to read
labels. This means the fine print on the back. Look at the ingredients section.
Is it whole, natural food? Don’t get too excited about the DRA percentages. Big food companies will deceive you with questionable
labeling and you’ll need to learn, if you want to control your own health. Pay
attention to what you eat. Get some books from a Natural Food store (or library
or online) and learn about Natural Foods. Get whole food recipes that you can
try. Start with my recipe page. You can always call or email with your questions.
